Our History
From a Milk Bar to an Alpine Hotel
Since 1958, the Berghaus has been growing step by step, always under the ownership of the Fankhauser family.
1958
Franz Fankhauser opens the Texas Milchtrinkstube with a handful of guest rooms.
1961
The milk bar becomes the Alte Hütte. The establishment grows alongside the development of mountain tourism in Tyrol.
2007
The family is opening the 4-star Alpinhotel Berghaus.
2013
The Berghaus Suites are being built at the Schafferhaus.
2019
There’s also a panoramic indoor pool, a natural swimming pond, an outdoor block sauna, a restaurant with a view of the Hintertux Glacier, and 8 lifestyle studios.
2021
The Green Living Apartments, an underground parking garage, and a ski and bike storage area round out the building.
Today
The third generation runs the mountain inn with the same warmth as in 1958.

For us, sustainability is part of our home, our technology, and our meals. Here are the initiatives you’ll experience during your stay.
Green Living House
Opened in 2021, the Green Living Haus is an eco-friendly passive house built using traditional timber construction methods, featuring solar panels, an air heat exchanger, and highly efficient thermal insulation. It houses our 10 Green Living Apartments, each measuring approximately 35 m².
Solar Power and Heat Recovery
Solar panels generate electricity right at the house. Heat recovery systems ensure a comfortable indoor climate and reduce energy consumption.
Carpet made from ocean plastic
The ski and bike storage area and the hallways of the suites feature the Object Carpet by Healthy Seas, made from recycled plastic that once polluted the oceans.
3 e-charging stations
If you arrive in an electric car, you can charge it at one of our three charging stations (for a fee).
From Our Own Farm, Aue
Beef, lamb, and game come straight to the table from the Aue farm, which is owned by the family. Hay-fed milk, beer, and mountain cheese come from the Zillertal. You’re welcome to visit the farm anytime and see where your food comes from.

Who runs the Alpinhotel Berghaus?
The Fankhauser family, now in its third generation: Thomas and Ulrike Fankhauser with their son Markus. You’ll see them every day around the hotel—at the front desk, in the restaurant, and at the bar.
How long has the Berghaus been around?
Since 1958. That’s when Franz Fankhauser opened the Texas Milchtrinkstube with just a handful of guest rooms. In 2007, it became the 4-star Alpinhotel Berghaus; in 2013, the Berghaus Suites were added; in 2019, the panoramic indoor pool and natural swimming pond were added; and in 2021, the Green Living Haus was added.
Where is the Alpinhotel Berghaus located?
In Madseit, Tux, in the upper Zillertal Valley in Tyrol, at an elevation of 1,400 meters. The ski bus stops right in front of the house and runs every 10 minutes; it’s a 3-minute ride to the Hintertux Glacier.
Where do the foods in the kitchen come from?
